SOMERS - The Somers Back-to-School Backpack Program, is seeking donations of school supplies prior to the start of school. Children from low-income households in town may qualify for a backpack filled with school supplies, and/or a voucher for new shoes. The backpack program benefits children from kindergarten through high school. All types of school supplies, suitable for all ages, such as notebooks, binders, loose leaf paper, subject dividers, pocket folders, flash drives, calculators, dictionaries, pencils and pens, erasers, index cards, highlighters, dry erase markers, as well as backpacks are being accepted. Monetary donations are also accepted in order to purchase supplies. Any donation will be accepted from now through August 20. Supply donations may be dropped off at the Somers Senior Center, 19 Battle St., Somers, or at the donation box’s at Somers Town Hall, Geissler’s Supermarket and locations around town. Monetary donations must be delivered to the Somers Senior Center by mail or in person; checks can be made payable to the Town of Somers, Backpack Program, and mailed to P.O. Box 308, Somers, CT 06071. The Senior Center business hours are Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. through 4 p.m., and Friday, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. For questions about the program, contact the town of Somers human services division at 860-763-4379.
