WILLIMANTIC- Fall registration for EASTCONN’s Capitol Theater Arts Academy (CTAA) is now open and both former and new registrants are invited to attend CTAA’s annual Open House and Shoe Exchange on Wed., Sept. 4, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at EASTCONN’s Capitol Theater, 896 Main St., Willimantic. Classes begin Monday, Sept. 9, and end Dec. 21. CTAA, which is EASTCONN’s community arts education program for children, ages 3 to 18, offers classes in theater, dance, creative writing, visual arts, musical theater, as well as private music lessons. New CTAA classes this semester include Acting 2, Stage Combat; Creative Storytelling!; Visual Creativity; and advanced levels of Tap and Jazz/Modern. All of CTAA’s classes are taught by local arts professionals. During CTAA’s Open House and Shoe Exchange on Sept. 4, students and their families may register for classes, tour the Capitol Theater, meet staff, watch student presentations and participate in free workshops. Free Open House workshops include: “Shakespeare,” with instructor Shane Kegler; “Caricatures,” with Bill Dougal; “Creative Writing,” with David McLeod; and “Sight Singing,” with Kasia Popovic. During the Open House, registering students may also exchange their gently used dance shoes. CTAA’s collection of lightly used jazz, tap and ballet shoes are used in the exchange. On Saturday, Sept. 14, CTAA will hold auditions for its annual holiday show, The Snow Queen, based on Hans Christian Andersen’s classic fairytale. Performances are scheduled for Dec. 20, 21 and 22. Students must be enrolled in at least one CTAA fall class in order to participate. CTAA is also now enrolling students for Illyria, which is based on Shakespeare’s light-hearted play, Twelfth Night. Registration is open to students who are 10 and older; performances will take place on March 7, and 8, 2014. To register children for CTAA’s fall classes, visit www.registereastconn.org/ctaa.
