How to Advocate for Your Special Education Student

REGION- - On Sept. 18, the meeting of Success Special Education PTO will feature the presentation How to Advocate for Your Special Education Student, presented by Kevin Daly, special education consultant and parent advocate. This presentation is aimed at parents of special education students who want to become more involved in their child's education. Topics will include: the role of parents in education; how to obtain your child's school records; how to prepare for a Planning and Placement Team (PPT) meeting; and advocacy beyond the PPT. The meeting will be held at the Willington Public Library, 7 Ruby Road, Willington, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Refreshments will be served. During the meeting, Leo Mercado, vice chairman of the Willington Board of Education, will receive the Spirit of SEPTO Award meeting to honor his long-standing dedication to the children of Willington. Special guests at the meeting will include state Rep. Sam Belsito, Willington First Selectman Christina B. Mailhos and Willington Superintendent of Schools David C. Harding. Success Special Education PTO is a resource group for parents and families living in Willington, Tolland, Stafford, Ashford, Mansfield and surrounding areas. It meets monthly at the Willington Public Library. Meetings regularly feature speakers and presentations on topics of interest to parents of children with disabilities.
