Scantic River paddle

SOMERS - The Scantic River Watershed Association (SRWA) invites the public for an afternoon paddle on the Scantic River at Somers Mill Pond, on School Street off of Route 190, on Saturday, Sept. 28. This will serve as the rescheduling of the full moon paddle which was cancelled in July. Registration will begin at 3 p.m.; the paddle will begin at 4 p.m. All participants must sign-in with the event planners upon their arrival. The paddle is open to the public; there is no fee involved. The SRWA is asking all participants to donate a non-perishable food item to benefit the local food shelves. All boaters must supply their own canoe or kayak, paddles and personal floatation devise or PFD. Sam Wentworth, from Boy Scout Troop 888, will also be there will also be there with information and accepting donations for his Eagle Scout project to build a bog bridge in the Scantic River Linear East Park, which connects to the Somers Mill area from Scitico. The paddle itself will be a leisurely 2.5 mile round-trip through the Mill Pond area and into a short section of the Scantic River above the Route 190 Bridge, then back to the dam area.
