5K road race

NORWICH- Reliance House, Inc. has partnered with the Hartford Marathon Foundation to bring a family friendly 5K road race to the eastern Connecticut community on Saturday, Nov. 30. The race will start and finish at Norwich Free Academy. Enrollment opens at 9 a.m., a free FitKids Fun Run will kick off at 10:30 a.m., and the 5K race will commence at 11 a.m. The top overall female and male finishers will be awarded $200, second place will receive $100, and third place will collect $50. Honors for the top winners in specific age groups will also be given. All participants and spectators are invited back to the Norwich Free Academy Atrium for the awards ceremony and special door prize drawing starting at noon. The registration fee is $28/person, students (18-22 years of age) with a valid student ID are $23/person, and those between the ages of 5-17 can register for a $10 fee until Nov. 24. Nov. 25 through race day, fees will increase to $32, $27, and $10 respectively. $1 from every 5K registration will be donated to the John Kelley Memorial Fund, a campaign to honor the native Olympic distance runner. Registration fees include a t-shirt and bib, with the first 300 registrants receiving a special dry-fit shirt. The FitKids Fun Run (ages 2-11) is free, however, all participants are required to register and will receive a t-shirt and award. Additional race activities will include a meet and greet with Amby Burfoot (1968 Boston Marathon winner and Runner’s World editor), face painting, and the annual Winterfest parade beginning at 1 p.m. Further race and registration information can be found on the Hartford Marathon’s website, www.hartfordmarathon.com.
