COLCHESTER- "Nothing but Nets" was started as a grass roots campaign in 2007 and has now blossomed into a global initiative with the help of the United Nations, NBA, MLB, and numerous churches throughout the world. The goal is to cover the entire continent of Africa by 2015 with bed covering mosquito nets impregnated with insect repellent. A child dies every 60 seconds, which is approximately 3,000 children daily throughout the continent. Thus far, since it is the female nocturnal mosquito that carries the disease, the deaths have been significantly reduced with this program, but there is more work to be done. Currently, funds raised are being used to cover the Cape area of Africa, so "Colchester Covers the Cape" was born. The mosquito on the Colchester green will be colored in red as the nets are purchased, toward a goal of 1,000 nets. Since Oct. 26 is Make a Difference Day, your contribution of $10 to purchase and send a net can make a large difference and save lives for many years to come.
