Veterans Day celebration

Moodus - posted Nov, 06 2013

MOODUS- Nathan Hale Ray Middle School, located at 173 Clark Gates Road in Moodus, will celebrate Veterans Day on Nov. 11 by inviting former and current members of the armed forces to share their experiences with 4-8th grade students. Featured activities include an all-school flag raising ceremony at 8:50 a.m. which will include members of the Moodus Fife & Drum Corps. At 1:35 p.m., all students will attend a flag lowering ceremony conducted by 8th grade students backed by a semi-circle of veterans. Students will read a poem and the Show Choir will perform a patriot song. As taps is played by a student, the flag will be lowered. Each grade level has prepared a variety of activities for students which will educate them about the purpose and meaning of this special American holiday. For example, sixth grade students will set a traditional white table in honor of those servicemen and women who are unable to sit at the family table. Fifth-grade social studies teacher Dana Hyatt, who served many tours of duty as a Marine, will display military memorabilia in the library. Teachers and administrators at NHRMS agree that spending the 11th day of the 11th month with our students teaching and learning about the contributions made by our armed forces fosters good citizenship and nurtures pride in country.
