ENFIELD - From 1992 to 2006 the annual tradition of placing wreaths to honor the fallen was conducted at Arlington National Cemetery, largely unknown by the general public except for visitors to those hallowed grounds. In order to continue and support this effort, in 2007 Wreaths Across America was formed. This non-profit organization continues the Arlington tradition as part of its mission to remember, honor and teach. In 2012 Wreaths Across America placed over 350,000 wreaths at more than 775 participating locations across the country and beyond. Their annual pilgrimage from Harrington Maine to Arlington National Cemetery is known as the world’s largest veteran’s parade. For 2013 the goal is make it personal by reaching out to local communities to help place wreaths on the graves of local veterans. Beginning in 2008, Enfield has held the wreath-laying ceremony at St. Patrick's cemetery honoring the veterans of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, Merchant Marines and POW/Mias. To coincide with the worldwide ceremony of Wreaths Across America, Enfield will be holding its sixth annual ceremony at St. Patrick's Cemetery, King St., on Dec. 14, at noon. The sponsors are asking residents, business community and civic organizations to help attain the goal of placing a wreath on each of the 1,360 veteran's graves at St. Patrick's Cemetery. the cost to sponsor a wreath is a $15 tax-deductable donation. For each $15, your selected fundraising group will receive $5. If you wish to honor a fallen service member by purchasing a wreath, you can contact Wreaths Across America directly at www.Wreaths AcrossAmerica.org and click on events/locations. Make sure to select CTSPCE-St. Patrick's Cemetery, Enfield, to ensure that the wreath is received in Enfield. The second way to sponsor is to send a check in any amount directly to Enfield's Wreaths Across America Committee. The committee will compile all donations and order the wreaths for the veterans at St. Patrick's Cemetery. The fundraising group donations will be split to benefit Enfield Food Shelf and Enfield Loaves & Fishes. Send your check made payable to Wreaths Across America to: Kelly Davis, Wreaths Across America, 52 Kalish Ave., Enfield, CT 06082.
