Family-To-Family education course

MANCHESTER - A free 12-week education and health care course for caregivers of adults with mental illness begins Monday, Feb. 3, at Center Congregational Church,11 Center St., Manchester. The course will be taught by two NAMI-trained family members, who themselves have loved ones with mental illness and know first-hand what families face. Registration is currently being accepted. Contact Muriel at 860-268-0303 or 626muri@gmail.com. This course has been researched, written and copyrighted through the national NAMI organization. It provides a broad perspective on mental illnesses, current research, treatment strategies and prospects for recovery. It teaches specific communication skills, problem solving and ways to handle crisis or relapses, as well as ways for caregivers to cope to alleviate worry, stress and overload. There is also guidance for for finding appropriate mental health care and supports in the community and how to advocate for them. Family to Family will help caregivers to better understand and support their loved ones, as well as caring for their own needs.
