SALEM- On Saturday, Feb. 8 at 11 a.m., curator and author Madelyn Shaw will present the program, "Slave Cloth, Shoddy, and Soldiers: Textiles and the Civil War" at the Salem Public Library. She will also be available to sell and sign copies of her book, "Homefront & Battlefield: Quilts and Context in the American Civil War." Through a look at quilts, clothing, flags, needlework, and military equipment such as tents and knapsacks, Shaw's talk will explore how textiles were a factor in the political and economic tensions that finally erupted into secession and war. Madelyn Shaw is an independent curator specializing in the exploration of American history and culture through textiles and dress. Registration is required. Call the library at 860-859-1130 to register for this free program.
