Farmers’ market opens for season
The first Hebron Farmers’ Market took place on Saturday, June 20, behind the First Congregational Church of Hebron on the corner of Route 85 and Route 66. Local farmers, crafters and healers set up shop for the first time, not knowing what to expect, but bringing all their home-grown , homemade goodies for local shoppers to embrace.

Murphy organized the local market. Chloe, Ayla and Rex from Hebron had fun looking at all the products from vendors. Stacey Weise smiled as Chloe, Ayla and Rex looked through her pictures.

“Six months ago, I had a vision while chatting with my friend from the art shop in town: We should have a farmers’ market!” said Maureen Murphy. “It was like waving a magic wand – very effortless . Everyone came together, took on different responsibilities. The location was a problem, but the first Congregational Church of Hebron and Pastor Kevin Zufall have been so marvelous.”
The Hebron farmers’ market has a special focus on art and music, as well as on the traditional local fruits and vegetables. Murphy had a vision of a wellness theme for this market. With many farms in and around Hebron, and with the many artisans found in the area, it was no problem filling up the venue with fresh produce and homemade products, such as jewelry, soaps and honey, and services such as massages . A band will play each week to add to the artistic, festive scene.
“It is a community gathering place and a cultural meeting place,” said Murphy. She looked around with a smile on her face, knowing that she had done something to connect the community . “This is what it’s all about. Friends coming out to support the local farmers , meet your neighbors and get some fresh air.”
Any time there is interaction between the farmers or artisans and the public, everyone wins. The farmers feel appreciated , and the public can see where their produce comes from.
“This is lovely. We weren’t sure what to expect,” said Shari of Hurst Farm. The vendors were very excited about the turnout.
The Hebron Farmers’ Market will take place every Saturday through the end of October, from 9 a.m. to noon. Plenty of parking is available, and for more information on setting up at the market, e-mail Karen Hull at kradding@mac .com, or visit the Web site www.hebronfarmersmarket.com.
