Two schools plant trees for International Earth Day 2009
Over the past year, students from two Windsor schools collected cans to raise money for a conservation project. The cans collected by Madina Academy and River Street School students raised enough money to help the town of Windsor purchase two trees.
Friday, March 20, marked International Earth Day 2009. To kick off this year’s “Cans for Conservation” project, students and teachers from the two schools met at Deerfield Park to plant the trees. It was a cold and crisp day, but the kids loved that they got a chance to be a part of this event.
Their hard work took a step toward protecting the environment by cleaning the air with the two new trees planted. Cyd Groff, environmental planner for the town of Windsor, noted, “The kids enjoyed the planting. For them, it is a very satisfying feeling to be a part of this project.”
The town plans to plant more trees again in March 2010, so students and civic groups are encouraged to collect returnable cans from now until April 22. The money raised will again be used to purchase trees that will be planted on town property. To register your group for this year’s program, contact Northwest Park at 285-1886 .
