‘Expendables 2’ reunites all-stars for mindless action extravaganza

There’s no doubt about it: “The Expendables 2” features the biggest guns, loudest explosions and highest body count of the summer. Those seeking the ultimate in video-game-like escapism have met their match – all others bring ear plugs, check common sense at the door, and prepare for over-stuffed chaos.

Continuing the exploits of the A-team of mercenaries, this sequel is another go-around for all-star action heroes. Watching Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis, Chuck Norris, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Arnold Schwarzenegger and a handful of others in perpetual battle will be a dream come true for ’80s action aficionados. But, as you likely could have guessed, dialogue and acting are not high on the list of priorities. These guys never met a catchphrase they couldn’t over-sell. The biggest crowd-pleaser is when they’re all in a climactic scene together and start saying each other’s classic tag lines. It’s both over the top and cliché, but good for a smirk.

Their stashes of ammunition are apparently never-ending – until it’s convenient to the plot for somebody to come up empty. That’s when the knives come out, and the brass knuckles, and the chains, and on and on and on...
