‘This is the End’ is wildly original, filthy and outrageously funny
Put simply, there is nothing else in theaters right now like the bizarre, dirty and hilarious “This is the End.” There probably never has been before, and there may never be again. It’s easily the season’s most fun and original film.
There’s a big Hollywood party at the home of James Franco (who – like all the other actors here – plays an exaggerated version of himself) when the Rapture occurs and a small group of panicky friends faces the Biblical end of days.
Franco, Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, Craig Robinson, Jay Baruchel and Danny McBride are the main players, but watch for side-splitting cameos from Emma Watson and Michael Cera. The film mocks self-serious celebrities, horror movies, religions of all kinds (among countless other targets), and tops it off with the most absurd non-sequitur dance sequence you’ll ever witness.
The concept is way out there, and the script – written by Rogen and Evan Goldberg – goes to places you would never expect. The circumstances of the plot are scary and violent, but the actors keep things light by making endless, fast-paced and impressively profane wisecracks about each other. If you like these actors, you’ll be in heaven; it’s their magnum opus. If not, well, pray for the end.
