Our town was hit really hard in last week’s thunderstorm. The trees took down power lines and made it very dangerous to be on the roads. As dangerous as it was to be out, I saw so many citizens assisting others. After the storm neighbors were outside helping other neighbors and it felt like a true community. Just think, the world would be a different place if we acted like this all the time.

In response to “FORK AHEAD:” I’m shaking in my shoes! Oh no! That evil Democratic Party who is taking away all our freedom! Of course, I am being sarcastic here, and am just reacting to what to me seems like some more scare tactics by a right extremist. Unfortunately , when businesses continue to put profits over people, and sell things with toxins in them that are killing us, we need to have some regulations. There are some who really do need our help – in particular, those who cannot help themselves, like the children, the frail elderly, and the (truly) disabled. The way I see it, the Democratic Party is the compassionate party, wanting to help the people of this country. Are you saying that it is not American to help others?

In response to “SUPERFICIAL?” I have a suggestion for you. How about you save all the water you would use to water your lawn and bring it to the people who don’t have water? I’m going to continue watering my lawn – one, because I can afford to, and two, because I take pride in what I own.

In response to “DESERVING PLAYERS ?” Soccer is extremely boring, that is why Americans don’t like it. Americans have good taste, and keeping soccer out of the forefront of our national sports queue was a fantastic idea. Football , baseball, basketball – sports that were invented here are what we should play. How much time did you waste researching those salary facts? That time could have been better spent learning how to play one of the big three American sports, rather than the European sport of soccer.

Recently, the local police in my town started parking a patrol car in various spots with a mannequin sitting in the driver’s seat. I think this is wrong, because it creates a false sense of security. If I was fleeing from someone who tried to assault me and I approached the patrol car, I would get no help. If I was having a medical emergency and needed assistance, I would not be able to receive any. What are the police officers doing when the mannequin is on patrol? It looks like my tax dollars are hard at work!

I have had it with hypocrites. They talk poorly about friends and family, but then are all smiles and icky sweet when face-to-face . How can people be so two-faced ? Better off to be honest with true blue relationships, than phony with fake relationships.

I saw recently that towns are planning to begin issuing “warnings” for residents who do not recycle. I am all for recycling, although the town does not make it that easy to recycle. We only get one small recycling bin to use, and if your recyclables overflow the bin, they will not take any of it! Many surrounding towns have the larger trash-size barrels for recycling. We pay more than most surrounding towns in property taxes, so we (in theory) should have better services. It’s great to recycle, but we need to enable the residents to do so. An average household can recycle far more than what that little bin can hold!

In response to “DESERVE BETTER?” Don’t blame the people for the un-watered grass at the veterans’ cemetery. Blame the grass! That grass needs to learn to take care of itself and stop relying on others to take care of it!

I was pumping gas the other day, when the store cashier came out to put the new gas prices up above the pump, and she was smoking! She wasn’t just endangering her own life, but she was endangering my life and all of the other customers’ lives! Isn’t it illegal to smoke near gas pumps? Doesn’t it say it right on the pump? And hello, if you work at a gas station, shouldn’t you be really familiar with the rules?

Why do people buy thick-coated / long-haired dogs, and them have them shaved down? Their coats protect them against the hot weather, sunburn and insects. You are not doing your dog any favors by shaving them. Please research the breed before buying a dog. If you are not up to caring for a long-haired or thick-coated dog, then you should not have bought one.

Did you know that the new cost-effective light bulbs are too bright for my visually-impaired son and many others, causing them to wear hats with visors and tinted glasses when they go in stores, schools, doctor offices, and people’s houses? Why can’t they create a screen to filter the brightness so he can walk about like an equal? People with disabilities are not treated as equally. Now it will be even worse, as the LED TVs are too bright so he can’t even watch TV. What happened to his rights? Don’t the manufactures know what they are doing to the brain-damaged and visually-impaired people of the world?

Why do waiters and waitresses address a tableful of guests as “guys?” I find it very annoying.

In response to “SUPERFICIAL?” I understand that watering your lawn may seem superficial... but then again, aren’t things like having an in-ground pool when there are perfectly good ponds out there superficial, too? I’m probably being a bit biased, as my family does water our lawn, but I find nothing wrong with having a nice lawn! It would be different if our town was going through a drought of some sort, but I think that a nice-looking yard reflects a clean lifestyle, and makes my family feel good. As for all those water-less countries, if there was a way to transfer my sprinkler water to them, I happily would, but as there isn’t , there’s really no harm done!

In response to “IS THIS TRUE?” It is true that the bin Laden family has had a relationship with Bushes for more than 30 years. George H.W. Bush met them and used to stay at their palace. Imagine how much the press would have freaked if Clinton did that! In addition, George W. Bush started his first oil company in 1976 with a member of the bin Laden family and their funding. Won’t get that info on Fox News! 9/11 was an inside job! Ask questions! Demand answers!

In response to “DID THEY DO IT?” The best way to insure an oil spill does not happen in 5,000+ feet of water is to allow drilling in more accessible areas. Remove drilling regulations that block shallow wells and wells above ground. An example of this would be the north shore in Alaska called ANWAR.

In response to “ISN’T AIR FREE?” Yes, air is free, but that electricity to run the compressor that puts that sweet “pressure” your tire needs is not. Most gas stations will happily turn on the pump for free – if you are a paying customer , that is.

A thank you to the young man who listed “free kittens” years ago. We forgot your name and couldn’t find your phone number because we had been in tears when you let us take two of your kittens. You had asked us to keep in touch because you cared. Well, one kitten lived to age 12 and the other kitten lived to age 18! Eighteen years is a long time ago, but we want to extend our gratitude to you. Both of these kittens had healthy, happy lives, ended only by illness that finally could not be treated anymore by the vet. Thank you for spending the money to put your ad in the paper for these kittens. They both lived happy lives and enriched ours.

In response to “NOT WORTHY:” This should seem absolutely right, except once you have returned home, only to find that the corn you have picked was eaten by worms, so now do you waste gas in the car, risk more environmental pollution and return the item, because now your child can’t eat a full dinner? Or was it just better to see if the corn was any good before making the purchase? Make the best decision you can at all times and at least try to live accountably, yet understand you can’t please everyone all of the time. Thank God for forgiveness, hopefully it gets us all through the day!

I don’t understand why so many people complain about bikers on their Harleys . You should welcome their noise, as it is a sound of summer and a reminder that nice weather is here! I would rather hear them than a plow at 3 a.m. waking me up to remind me I have to get up early to shovel!

In response to “NOT WORTHY:” Let’s just be clear... My husband and I are supporting a family of five on a single income in today’s hideous economy. When I go to the grocery store, or any store, I do not intend to waste what little money we have to spend on garbage! This means that when I buy grapes, I will not be taking the ones that are smashed in the bottom of the bag, or shriveled and brown. When I buy meat, I will not be taking the one with the gray tint to it. And when I spend $4.99 on a dozen ears of corn, I will not get home to find that three of them have no kernels, when I could have just checked at the store! So to all of you that eyeball me while I am opening my corn to make sure I am not getting ripped off, bring your carriage over and I will be happy to load it with the half rotten food I refuse to waste my money on. Apparently you have more money to spare than I!

In response to “ISN’T AIR FREE?” If you encounter a gas station that charges for air for your tires, remember where it is located and report the gas station to the state. And if possible (by cell phone camera), take a picture of where it states how much they charge. Who knows, you might even be reimbursed !

In response to “SUPERFICIAL?” I drove by a local business during a day of heavy storms all day, only to see the sprinklers going at full blast during heavy downpours. Sprinkler systems can be equipped with a rain detector that shuts off the system if it’s been raining. Either the system at this business is not working, or the owners have decided that it’s okay to waste as much water as possible.
